David Chapman is a Sound Artist

David is in Group 1

David Chapman is a documentary maker and sound artist. Originally a professional musician, he studied film theory and production in the 1980s. He went on to produce documentaries for broadcast television, academic research projects as well as new media based art projects.

His recent work has focussed on the durational exploration of specific sites and landscapes through video, sound and socially engaged practice. Much of the work is based on the long-term gathering of sound and video material at a particular location, sometimes using specialised audio recording technology and post-production manipulation. The intention is to make visible or audible hidden elements, cycles and patterns within the landscape and to re-configure a perceptual or imaginative engagement with these places and environments. His work also has included an active collaborative strand. Recent exhibitions include video and live work as part of the year-long group show Reap (2005), curated by Anne Bean at Southwark Park, London; and a soundscape Hark, (2005/6), a collaborative installation produced with natural history photographer David Cottridge, shown at the Field Station, Gunpowder Park, Waltham Abbey. He is also a Senior Lecturer in Media Production at the University of East London.
