Joe Duffy's Peripheries

Mapping of experiences and narratives around the Bantar Gebang area, Bekasi, Java, Indonesia's largest landfill site. Space is mapped through the real and the virtual, from the software processed to the hand drawn and connected to formal representations in image/film/audio as objects and installation. The project gives voice to individual perspectives and narratives to reveal migration, transit and experience of the 'everyday' of urban peripheries and informal economies of manual recycling.

Joe Duffy's MERAPI

2 Channel video installation (8min loop)

A journey through the site of the volcanic eruption at Mt Merapi in Java, Indonesia reveals narratives of loss and displacement, fragments of images and voices which tell of myths of possessive ogres, unrequited love and spiritual beliefs. Visually displayed in the interiors of destroyed villages and homes and a trek to the summit with the volcano rescue team indicate relationships and meaning within the environment.
