Research Exchange and Dissemination

2010

Alison Welsh, Philip Sykas and Melanie Miller from Fashion and Textile attended the opening and conference of "The Power of Copying – 2010 International Contemporary Design from Selected Art Academies" exhibition. They have formed research links with other twelve participants of worldwide art and design institutes.

Dr Philip Sykas went on his first research trip to China. He met with people of textile research in Suzhou city and the Suchow University. Dr Sykas delivered a lecture there and collected research materials for his research.

Dr Annie Shaw from Fashion and Textile represents MMU in the International Creative Pattern Design Competition 2010 which organised by China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Her work has won two awards in the competition and formed some research links.

2009

Professor Zhou Jirong from Central Academy of Fine Arts came to give talks and workshops in the UK to accompany "Direct Observation" exhibition.

2008

Professor Li Wenxuan from Xiamen University joined the Tatton RHS show and gave a lecture on traditional Chinese landscape painting as a part of "Tales from a Chinese Garden" event.

2007

Master Class

Master Class is a self-sufficient programme, co-organised with Chinese Higher Art Institutes, aims to bring specific topics in art and design domain not only to Chinese university students but also to Chinese professionals and the general public, in order to raise awareness in China.

In 2007, three Master Classes have happened in China. Sponsored by the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) and Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA), Ed Bennis led his Master Class on Art of Landscape at CAFA in May and at GAFA in November. David Haley also gave his Master Class on Ecological Art at GAFA in November. The issues of urban development and art ecology have been emphasized in those courses. The Master Class has accompanied the MMU Art and Design Show in Beijing and Guangzhou.

Dr Barbara Rawlings' Short Term Lecture at the Art College of Xiamen University

Co-organised by MIRIAD and the Art College of Xiamen University, Dr Barbara Rawlings has visited the Art College of Xiamen University to give a two-week Short Term Lecture on 'Research Methods' in July 2007. See Photographs.

Traditional Chinese Music Concert

Co-organised with Royal Northern College of Music, five musicians from the Music College of Xiamen University presented a traditional Chinese music concert to audience of Manchester on Monday 30th April 2007 at RNCM Studio Theatre with contextualisation and interpretation by Professor Hyatt. Traditional Chinese Music and Rock 'n' Roll

Musicians from the Music College of Xiamen University have collaborated with Professor Hyatt to write and produce "cultural cross-over" new musical compositions. They have presented their collaboration as a joint concert at the opening of 'Made in Manchester' Art & Design Work from Manchester Metropolitan University • China Show in Xiamen. See Photographs.

Public Lectures

Professor Hyatt has delivered two public lectures about his art and music during the periods of the MMU China Shows, the first in Beijing at the School of Architecture, Central Academy of Fine Art and the second at Xiamen University.
