Exhibiting Africa: some thoughts about pots

Moira Vincentelli is Senior Lecturer in Art History and Curator of Ceramics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. As a teacher, lecturer and writer she has sought to expand ways of thinking about the field of art and ceramics crossing the boundaries between contemporary ceramics, studio pottery, gender studies, oral history and social anthropology. As Curator of the Ceramic Collection and Archive at Aberystwyth she has been responsible for the development of a major collection of studio pottery and contemporary ceramics in the UK together with paper documents, video and oral history recordings associated with the history of ceramics. In 2000 her book Women and Ceramics, Gendered Vessels was published and this was followed by a second book Women Potters, Transforming Traditions, A&C Black, Rutgers 2003. Her most recent project, in collaboration with Manchester Museum is as curator of the exhibition Sankofa, Ceramic Tales from Africa based on field trips to Ghana, South Africa, Tunisia and Morocco.
