Maurice Neumont’s poster shows a French ‘poilu’ seemingly rooted into the very soil of his homeland. He almost seems to be growing out of the fertile soil, emphasizing the connection between the soldier and his nation. The poster commemorates the two battles of the Marne - where the Allies twice halted the German advance on Paris - and expresses the determination not to give up any land to the invaders.
