The image of the sower wasn’t just used in Austria-Hungary, as these two post-war French posters demonstrate.

The metaphor of renewal and re-growth was particularly apt as France tried to reconstruct her economy and society after the end of the war. George Scott's image reinforces this idea with a depiction of the rising sun to symbolise a new beginning.

Lucian Jonas's poster depicts Marianne, the female personification of France, as the sower. Similar images were used on French coins, and Marianne is still depicted as a sower on the reverse of French Euro coins.
