These two Austro-Hungarian posters depict sowers, and use the planting of seeds as a metaphor for renewal and growth. One of the sowers is a demobilized soldier still wearing his uniform.

The purposeful stride of Franke’s sower suggests the nobility and dignity of rural life in a similar way to Jean-François Millet’s painting “The Sower” (1850).
