French Agriculture
These two posters illustrate the importance of the French agrarian economy, which employed 40% of the French workforce at the start of the war.
One of the posters shows a soldier ploughing a field, preparing it for planting. By depicting a soldier the poster makes the point that ploughing the fields is as important as fighting in the trenches: it’s all part of the same “duty” (as the poster’s text says) for France. The poster also asks for the public to buy a War Loan: another way to contribute to the war effort.
The other poster shows the harvest, depicting the rewards that the land gives. The poster also asks for contributions to the War Loan, this time to help “to return the sweet land of France to us whole”.
