Scots Heroes
British posters aimed at the Scottish public often called upon historical heroes that had once specifically stood in opposition to the English. Men who had once risen against the domination of a large, oppressive nation state over a smaller one, once more took a similar stance.
Figures such as William Wallace and Robert the Bruce remain powerful national icons in Scotland, representing the fight to govern one’s own land, and thus one’s own destiny. A struggle that was now being played out all across the battlefields of Europe.
Whilst, Wallace and Bruce still generated the same passion for the idea of defending the homeland, the target of the hostility was now aimed elsewhere. The intentions of these posters was not to instigate bad feelings towards the English. As the title of Wright’s poster suggests, their aim was to unite the nation in defending its freedom.
