Manchester Oxford Road - Avenue of the Giants
MIRIAD, with MMU's External Relations Division, has been instrumental in the founding of the Manchester Oxford Road Cultural Corridor Group, Chaired by Peter Fell of Regional Affairs, University of Manchester. The Group is made up of representatives of the major cultural institutions on Oxford Road and local and regional government. The Group's Executive Group, produced a Vision Paper (PDF) for the development of Manchester Oxford Road.
Avenue of the Giants
The Manchester Oxford Road Cultural Corridor Group formed a Public Art Sub-Committee, chaired by the Director of MIRIAD. The work of the group was collated as a Public Art Strategy in a paper authored by Professor Hyatt, The Avenue of the Giants (PDF). This document has been presented by Hyatt to local, regional and national government and has been accepted as a strategy of the Manchester Knowledge Capital initiative.
A collaboration with students of the Manchester Metropolitan University Business School resulted in an Avenue of the Giants Scoping Document (PDF).
MIRIAD is currently preparing to begin some initial Avenue of the Giants projects for a series of events in October 2005 - news to be announced shortly.
Digital Development
MIRIAD is collaborating with the Manchester Digital Development Agency to push forward the project's digital direction. Research into the needs/desires of Manchester Oxford Road's residents was conducted by way of questionnaire (MS Word). MIRIAD and MDDA are jointly funding a PhD programme into the use of new technologies, especially mobile phone innovations, as a public art intervention into the experience of the Road.
